Yes, that includes your roof. Regular maintenance on your roof, in all seasons, means it will last a long time. We’ll give you a checklist to go through, to make tackling your roof spring cleaning tasks a little easier.
1. Take a closer look at your ceilings
This is something you probably should pay attention to, no matter the season. You want to pay attention to some common signs of moisture damage, such as drywall spots, plaster tape pulling away, or discolouration.
2. Inspect your attic
You’re probably not paying so much attention to your attic other than pulling out some seasonal decorations, and even then, how close do you really look? Take out a flashlight and walk around your attic searching for signs of water damage. Are any vents missing? Is the underside of your roof showing signs of moisture? If you noticed moisture damage on your ceilings from step one, you must address these issues as they are going to be showing up in your attic and could cause further more expensive damage. If you didn’t notice signs of water damage on your ceilings but noticed it in your attic you still need to address these issues before they progress further into your home. And its important to make sure your attic is properly ventilated here’s why.
3. Check for mold and mildew
While inspecting your ceilings and attic, this is an important one to watch for. Once mold has set in, it’s quite expensive to fix. If you have moisture damage already, getting it taken care of before mold sets in is crucial, not only for the damage it can cause and the expense to repair but for you and your family’s health as well.
4. Check your shingles and gutters
Now time to head out into that nice spring weather. From the ground, you should be able to see if shingles are missing and gutters are pulling away from your roof. Commonly, the side of the roof that will show the most damage will be the south to southwest facing side. Pay closer attention to this side. You should not try to fix any missing shingles yourself. Let a professional take care of this part, without proper equipment this task is quite dangerous especially on high pitched roofs.
